Picture your success
Visualization is based on neuroscience — how the brain works. When combined in the context of vision and strategic action, it can have powerful results.
Did you know there are two types of visualization?
1. Outcome Visualization
This method involves seeing yourself achieving your end objective by creating a detailed mental image of your desired result. Most people think of this when they hear visualization, and there is some debate about whether it works.
2. Process Visualization
This method consists of envisioning each action needed to achieve the desired outcome. You focus on each of the steps required to achieve your goal, not just the goal itself.
For example, many athletes use a version of process visualization called 'mental rehearsal.' Sports psychologists emphasize working through the steps needed to reach the goal and not skipping right to the end aspiration. Such as telling a basketball player to picture everything required to perfect their three-point shot successfully, not just winning the entire game. By doing this, athletes can create neural pathways in the brain that become conditioned to achieve what they have imagined. Research shows that working through the steps of doing something in your head can significantly increase your chances of doing it in real life. It enhances motivation and increases confidence too.
I recommend picturing what could go wrong and how you would also work through the situation. Most people leave that part out, and it's incredibly beneficial. It keeps you from getting flustered and giving up when you encounter obstacles.
Too often, people have a mistaken notion about visualization — that all they have to do is visualize, and things will magically appear in their lives. However, the only way to make your vision a reality is to back it with inspired action. You must get a clear picture of what you want, mentally take yourself through each step to get there, and then put in the work to make it happen!
