The 2-Minute Rule

A common misconception of successful individuals is that they are motivated all the time. The truth is they take small steps towards their goals no matter how they feel so they can continue to make forward progress.

One of my favorite productivity tools for when you do not feel motivated is the 2-Minute Rule. The easier you make it to begin without pressure, the more likely you will start whatever you need to get done.

Here are a few examples:

-If you have to read a book for class but don't like the subject set a timer for 2 minutes and read a few pages. Once you have begun, you will notice that it's easier to keep going.

-If you want to incorporate mediation into your day, start with 2 minutes and then see if you can extend it to five minutes once you are relaxed and have quieted your mind.

-If you need to write an essay but can't seem to put pen to paper, write an outline or bullet points for 2 minutes, and you will notice the thoughts will begin to flow.

The 2 Minute Rule will help you master showing up. It's easier to increase and sustain progress once you are in the zone. Also, it is better to do less than you hoped than nothing at all.

Whether it's regular homework, preparing for a big exam, or incorporating healthy habits into your day, beginning with 2-minutes will help you get started and gain momentum. You will be amazed at how well this works even when you feel tired and lack motivation.
